Stirrings in the Night

Published in The Promise

He has made everything beautiful in its time; also he has put eternity into man's mind, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end. — Ecclesiastes 3:11

In a world pressed down by death
man, bound in chains, entangled in a maze,
walks a circling pathway leading to extinction.

The irony is — immortality beckons!

Overhead the stars
trace endless diagrams on space,
a beneficent sun warms earth-borne life,
our inward ear strains toward the echo
of an Eden gone, and upon our withered tongue
lingers the aftertaste of sweet primeval fruit.

The world tosses stale crumbs, as if to satisfy
a hunger God-deep and eternity-wide.
But, sighing in our beds at night,
our ancestral genes remember with longing
that other home.
